A few weeks ago, we met our new neighbor. “Don’t try to convert me” she emphatically declared, “I don’t want anything to do with church.” That reminded me of an earlier conversation with another neighbor, who told the story of the days when he had been involved in a church. “I was on the finance board,” he told me, “and left because it was corrupt. Never been back to a church since.”
These were just two of my more recent stories, but I’ve heard similar stories dozens of times. I suspect that everyone reading this has at least one comparable story – someone who equated church with Christianity, found it lacking, and thus rejected Christ.
What we’ve all noticed in our lives is validated by more objective data. In his book, unChristian, David Tinnaman shares some remarkable data.
…in America the vast majority of people (even outsiders) are exposed to the message of Christianity many times throughout their lives – in churches, via media, through their friendships, and so on. For instance, among non-Christian ages sixteen to twenty-nine – that is, atheists, agnostics, those undecided about their faith, and individuals affiliated with other faiths – more than four out of every five have gone to a Christian church at some time in their life (82 percent). Most of these attended for at least three months. (p. 74)
Let’s Consider This about Churchianity
Based on research, most of those outside of the Church – 82% of the non-Christians between the ages of 16 to 29 – have attended a Christian church at some time in their lives! Halleluiah! We are getting them into the churches! That’s an incredible statistic.
The problem is that what happens there so turns them off that they are lost to Christianity for the rest of their lives. They equate church with Christianity, and find church to be disagreeable, and so reject Christ.
It’s like we are vaccinating them from ever considering Christ again. A vaccination is made from dead and powerless organisms, that when injected into our body prevent us from contacting the real thing. That’s exactly what we are doing to the lost around us. We bring them into our churches, and it turns them off. They equate church with Christianity and then become immune to the real power of Christ.
Most outsiders have grown up around Christians; many have given the “Jesus thing” a thorough test drive; a majority have tried churches and found them desperately lacking relevance. (p. 77)
While few people are willing to acknowledge it, the research and our own personal experience indicates that church turns people off.
Churchianity – a turnoff?
The most common response from the religious establishment is to argue for superficial adjustments: “We need better music, a more eloquent pastor, a hipper youth minister.” Unfortunately, we’ve had generations of ‘improvements” and yet the percentage of Christians in this country continues to decrease. The problem is deeper and more systemic than just an adjustment in the superficials.
Churchianity – a substitute?
The real problem is that we have substituted churchianity for Christianity. Churchianity emphasizes the institutional church, and Christianity focuses on Christ. Now, I understand that every pastor of every institutional church will tell you that his church focuses on ‘proclaiming Christ’ or some such catchphrase. The problem is not what the institutional church says, it is what it does.
Churchianity urges you to evangelize by inviting interested friends to ‘come to church.’ Once there, they are pressured to attend all the services and engage in all the programs and activities and thus, they maintain, grow as a Christian. In a big church, one can be busy with church-related activities every day of the week. It’s a formula that seems to work for a small percentage of the population. Christianity, on the other hand, emphasizes personal testimony and relational evangelism.
Churchianity claims that the way to spiritual growth is through involvement in the services and program it offers. Christianity emphasizes a personal relationship with Christ and personal leading of the Holy Spirit.
Churchianity – a failure?
From all but the most subjective and biased perspectives, the institutional church system has failed at its number one task: ‘making disciples.’ Despite over $530 Billion dollars spent on ‘church,’ the percentage of Christians in the US is smaller than at any time in recorded history and shrinking regularly.
“But,” some of you are thinking. “We have to go to church. How else will we be ‘fed’? If we didn’t have pastors teaching us, how would we grow?”
I Understand…I chose Christianity
There was a time when I believed it, too. The problem is, for the most part, Christians in the institutional church don’t grow. Christianity does not impact their lives in any observable way.
Now, I understand that you may have grown as a Christian. You may have a small group of friends or church-going colleagues who have also matured spiritually. So, your perspective is formed by those closest around you. Granted that there are, in every congregation, a small percentage of people who are impacted and transformed by Christ.
However, you are the exception, not the rule. I would submit that you have grown spiritually despite, not because of, your involvement in the institutional church system. The reality is that the ICS (institutional church system) absolutely fails to impact the lives of the vast majority of churchgoers.
Don’t take my word for it. Here’s pollster David Kinnaman’s conclusions:
In virtually every study we conduct, representing thousands of interviews every year, born-again Christians fail to display much attitudinal or behavioral evidence of transformed lives. For instance, based on a study released in 2007, we found that most of the lifestyle activities of born-again Christians were statistically equivalent to those of non-born-agains. When asked to identify their activities over the last thirty days, born-again believers were just as likely to bet or gamble, to visit a pornographic web site, to take something that did not belong to them, to consult a medium or psychic, to physically fight or abuse someone, to have consumed enough alcohol to be considered legally drunk, to have used an illegal, non-prescription drug, to have said something to someone that was not true, to have gotten back at someone for something he or she did, and to have said mean things behind another person’s back. No difference. (p. 47)
In drilling down deeper into this phenomenon, Kinnaman examined sexual attitudes:
One study we conducted examined American’s engagement in some type of sexually inappropriate behavior, including looking at online pornography, viewing sexually explicit magazines or movies, or having an intimate sexual encounter outside of marriage. In all, we found that 30 percent of born-again Christians admitted to at least one of these activities in the past 30 days, compared to 35 percent of other Americans. In statistical and practical terms, this means the two groups are essentially no different from each other. (p.47)
While the Barna Group’s research results are one thing, I believe that each of us have a personal observation that supports his conclusions. We all know people who claim to be “born-again,” attend the worship services with regularity and yet live lives that fail to show any kind of Christ-like influence.
Churchianity ≠ Christianity
And, while it’s convenient to focus on that small percentage of people at the front of the auditorium, whom the institutional church seems to have touched, no one keeps track of the dozens in the back who are turned off by the event, and never come back. These people erroneously believe that church equals Christ, and if they can’t tolerate church, that must be that Christ is lacking for them. They believe that because we’ve taught them that.
The sad reality is that by substituting churchianity for Christianity, we have failed in our fundamental Christian tasks — to evangelize the lost and to transform the lives of the saints.
Image the ICS were a business that burned through $530 billion dollars, produced an inferior product and lost market share. How long would we allow that entity to exist? The solution would not be a new branch manager, nor an imaginative logo. We would recognize that there was something inherently and deeply flawed about the business model. We would put that business out of its misery, toss it onto the pile of really bad ideas, and move on.
Isn’t it time we did the same with churchianity? Isn’t it time that we left the institutional church system and embraced Christianity in its place?

I could not agree with you more. Deep into church, turned totally off, left the church scene. It was and is only by God’s tender grace and mercy over some very rough terrain that He guided my steps and heart to Him.

I agree with your point of view. Many times my wife and have been subjected to behaviour that has nothing to due with Christ, yet they go to church regularly. We are truly amazed at their behaviour. We intend to honour Jesus Christ with our daily walk in our lives. There’s a saying “ This ain’t heaven so don’t expect perfection. “ We do our best to live our imperfect lives daily under the stewardship of Jesus Christ.
Finally, church can be a turn off. It’s our relationship with Jesus Christ that matters most to us regardless of the People we meet and see in church or elsewhere regardless. I believe healthy boundaries are necessary.

I am sorry for my comments I sent to you.
In Hebrews 10, we, as Christians, are encouraged to hold fast to the confession of our hope and not to waver. Additionally, we’re asked to consider how to encourage one another in love and good deeds. In your expressions about the lack of true expressions of Christianity within the church, I hear a fairly astute challenge to return to those callings for believers. Hebrews 10 also encourages us not to abandon meeting together, as is the habit of some.
In your 8 October 2014 post (Business as mission, Christian living), you state,
“It is, for some of us, more than enough that we comport ourselves as Christians in the workplace. That is a matter of allowing our day-to-day lives to be directed by the Spirit and shaped by our Christian values. Our work is sacred. Our jobs are sacred. Our jobs are a great part of our ministry. We are ministers of business.”
For most of my adult life, I have tried to live by a combination of a couple scriptures by being prepared in season and out to give an account for the hope that is in me. That has been my way of following Hebrews 10.
Having retired as a senior military officer, one statement stuck out in peer conversations. “Bring me solutions, not just problems.”
As stated above, you astutely express at length in both your 20 January 2020 and 8 October 2014 posts the problems that exist within expressions of Christianity in institutional settings known as the church. The verses in Hebrews 10 which precede those quoted above would concur that the work of Christ remedied a futility in the institutional functioning of followers of God. What they did over and over and year after year did not result in eternal transformation. Christ offered an eternal solution which had transformational benefits even during a believer’s continued life on earth.
Hebrews 10, by challenging followers not to abandon meeting together, provides a realistic truth that for all of us, the ability to “go it alone” is not enough. Recognizing that our work, jobs, and businesses are sacred sets a significant foundation but the fellowship of believers is essential for maintaining the direction of the Spirit and shaping our Christian values. God made us to live in community. “It is not good for [God’s creation] to be alone” from the Genesis creation story fully expresses this reality.
You may have expressed some of the above about how to live in community outside the institutional church in your book, “Is the Institutional Church really the Church” (which I could purchase for $13.99) but I haven’t read it so I can’t write from fully reading your thoughts on the matter.
Based on what I have read, I offer a challenge to your business model. Freely articulating a problem and then selling a solution through a purchased book isn’t much different than models followed by tele-evangelists and now increasingly the institutional church as it moves on-line.
The institutional church has, more often than not, failed in its calling, abandoned its mission, been the wolf rather than the shepherd, and relegated to the government its responsibilities for “caring for widows and orphans” in the community. If the solution for Christian ministry and transformational growth is not the institutional church, I would offer (without the business model of buying a book on the matter) that, in addition to “comporting ourselves as Christians in the workplace,” we actively meet together as believers, sharing meals together, supporting one another in times of need, visit in each other’s homes, study God’s Word together, hold one another accountable to how the Spirit directs us and shapes our Christian values, and celebrate meeting together as Hebrews 10 suggests.
As most parents of toddlers quickly learn, it is a valuable lesson to not take away one thing without offering another in its place. When we leave the institutional church because it has lost its salt, fellowship together with other believers in other settings can be transformational.
HI Tim, Thanks for such a thoughtful comment. We have lots of things we agree on. And, I’m flattered that you read so much of my work. I would like to comment on a couple of your ideas. In a couple of places you mention the
‘business model’ of offering a book as a solution. My work with Christian businesses is not a business. It doesn’t support itself. I subsidize it with earnings from my real business. Further, the “institutional church” book is not a solution, but a challenge to question. If I were to do a P&L statement on the book it would probably yield a deficit of several hundred dollars. If inviting people who are interested to dig deeper into a subject is the issue, then I am guilty. Hebrew 10:24 is often used by the purveyors of the institutional church to justify their events. While there are lots of ways that one can understand and implement the verse, one thing is for sure: It does not refer to the meetings of the institutional church. There was no institutional church when it was written so it must refer to something else. The most common expression of this idea is in the house churches which we see repeatedly in the New Testament. House churches are a more Biblical manifestation of the church and a solution I would recommend. And there are other ways to fulfil the directive: home bible studies, support groups, and in business, peer groups all provide a way to meet together and support each other. In my CBIG (Christian Business Impact Groups)groups, a group of 4 – 8 Christian business people meet once a month for four hours to support and encourage each other. I have often said to them that the experience we have in those groups is the closest thing to the meeting of the early church that they will probably have in their lifetime. The institutional church has spent 50 Billion dollars on itself in the last 20 years and lost market share. If it were a business entity, any reasonable person would think that the model is flawed and unsalvageable. Put it out of business and start fresh with something else.
